In the early 1870s, the Canadian West was home to whiskey traders, outlaws and gold seekers, many of them Americans.  Sir John A. MacDonald created the North West Mounted Police in 1873 to bring law and order to the Canadian West.  Taking the role of an eastern newspaper reporter, students will learn about the factors leading to the formation of the NWMP, the difficulty of their gruelling trek west and how effective the new Force was in accomplishing its mission of establishing and maintaining law and order.  Students will use a number of primary source documents in this program.
